spend two days in salzburg with me
Welcome back travel lovers,
I am so excited to share with you a new digital postcard about my two day stop in Salzburg. This beautiful city was my first in a five city Interrailing experience, which I will be writing more about soon.
If you’re new here, hey! My name is Laura and I set up ThatGirlAdventures to share my travels. I aim to craft each blog post like a digital postcard that document my travels, whilst hopefully still being helpful.
I’m so happy to have you here, but for now, let’s dive into my 2 day Salzburg itinerary…
Now I’ll be candid with you, early morning flights aren’t my thing. I know there’s less chance of delays, but I am definitely a fly out late fly back late person. Which is exactly why I booked my flight to Salzburg at 11:15am from Gatwick, landing into Salzburg at 14:30pm, one hour ahead of the UK.
It was at exactly this point in time in which I realised the situation I had voluntarily put myself into, flying from London to Salzburg with nothing but a backpack and o2 Roaming… I’m not a huge planner when it comes to travelling, purely because a lot of my favourite travel experiences have happened off the cuff.
Whether I bought a car parking ticket or an actual bus ticket from the machine outside the airport terminal I will never know, but what I do know is the number 2 bus goes directly from the airport to the city. As I mentioned earlier, this trip was part of a two week long Interrail experience, so it’s fair to say I was on a budget and wanted to use taxis as infrequently as possible.
It was such a relief to reach the hostel and walk around the city without the huge backpack, but this was when the real adventure began! I only spent an evening in Salzburg on my first day but I’ve dropped in some other ideas if you want to fly in earlier and spend two full days there.

One of the things I had pre booked was a Classical Concert, set in the heart of Salzburg. Austria is home to some of the most famous classical composers, and as someone who loves to write to classical melodies, this was the perfect opportunity for some fresh inspiration.
It was also main character energy as the concert came set with a three course dinner beforehand. I encourage anyone, regardless of if you’re travelling, to have a solo dinner out, especially at a nice restaurant. I promise you it’s one of the most freeing things you can do.
The food was beautiful, I do not have a photo as I promptly ate it because it was that good. I was also trying not to be on my phone and enjoy the moment, but if you’re not comfortable dining alone taking a book is a great hack.
The concert was beautiful but it was quite long and finished quite late so I didn’t get to do too much more exploring. If you get an earlier flight and early check in I’d recommend going for a walk or a cycle along the river, or exploring some of the museums in the Dom Quarter as there are loads.
As some of you know, I work abroad around nine months of the year on cruise ships, so I get to see a good chunk of the globe. When you’re travelling to the same places and working it can get a bit repetitive so I try as much as possible to discover new places during my breaks.
There are some places that grab you as soon as you step foot in them. Salzburg reignited my passion for travel in a way I can’t decide and reminded me why I travel. Finding places that reignite your travel spark are so important.
And do you know what? It is absolutely okay to get travel fatigue, where it doesn’t feel as special anymore, and it’s nothing to feel guilty about. If anything, it makes me appreciate the simpler things in life, and not lose sight of having a balance.
And I still had another day of discovering Salzburg to enjoy…
Day two consisted of taking the vehicular up to see the Dom Quarter from above. It is STEEP so not one for those who suffer with Vertigo. It leads up to Hohensalzburg Fortress which overlooks the city. I did this with my SALZBURG PASS which is 100% worth getting. It pays for the vehicular, Fortress, Dom Quartier, Mozart birthplace and Residence.
One thing to note is that Mozart attractions did have some funky opening times, so it’s worth double checking them so it doesn’t throw off your day. Overall, I think having a pass like the Salzburg pass made solo travelling there so special, as there was so much to do.

I would go back to Salzburg in a hearbeat. It was such a perfect place to start my inter railing journey across Europe. If you want to read more about my first inter railing journey, stay tuned by joining us over on Instagram here.
